New 5 axis milling centre Investment

Committing to our growth strategy this year, AMF invested in a DMG Monoblock 95 machine centre, a new addition to our 5 axis CNC machines fleet. This new CNC milling machine with 950 mm traverse on the x-axis allows us to machine bigger and complex parts of various materials in a more cost effective way. The latest hi-tech features of the machine (e.g 3D control systems) enable the engineers to be more proactive in deciding the manufacturing strategy for each part and identify better machining ways in advance. This machine centre will increase significantly our capacity, make us even more flexible and respond faster to our customer needs on time.

High Value Manufacturing

AMF Engineering Improvement Team is driving successfully the implementation of a cutting edge manufacturing technique for machining of hard materials such as Inconel, Nickel Aluminium Bronze, Duplex Stainless Steel and other exotic alloys. We have managed to reduce the cycle time up to 10 times in some cases and maintain high quality to very tight tolerances Right First Time by utilising hi-spec tools and modern manufacturing techniques. Congratulations to our team and thanks to our customers for their positive feedback.

“Building a stronger workforce for a sustainable future”

Investing in young people is the way we see the future of our and our customers success. AMF has taken on three more apprentices – currently looking for a further one – to expand the company’s wide apprenticeship scheme. Romany, Alex and Ryan are working towards AMF established Personal Development plan which coupled with their college studies will enable them to develop expertise in accounts and engineering in a fast growing manufacturing environment.

Business of Education Workshop

Having strong ties with academia and global business leaders, AMF was invited to present how partnership between industry and University can benefit the companies for future growth. The AMF Business Improvement Engineer, Kostas Stamatopoulos, was one of the three guest speakers presenting the benefits and the challenges of this form of partnership for future success.

“The university of Liverpool and the Agility&Supply Management Centre provides me with cutting edge training and the latest tools which my team and I apply to AMF for business development; we continually improve our procedures and processes by staying up to date with management techniques and technology innovations. I am in a position to say that the business is on the right path for sustainable growth while we provide academia with real business projects allowing them to complete further research and development” Kostas outlined.

Matt Ellis, Quality Manager, added that: “AMF’s strategy is to invest in the future of the business and employees in order to successfully provide  cost effective solutions to its customers; this partnership has historically resulted in growth and success and that is the reason we carry with this strategy.”

The event took place in Salford in November 2012 and published in Insider Business Magazine (Dec 2012).

Partnership for Innovation

AMF has started to collaborate with the well established global R&D centres CERN, ILL, ESRF, ESO and ISIS by offering services in precision manufacturing, assembly and UHV cleaning to the highest of standards. We are proud to announce that AMF has won their first order from ESRF while working with the others for the manufacturing of a number of hi-tech parts and assemblies for future innovative projects.

AMF have a great reputation and expertise in  manufacturing parts and building modular fully tested assemblies for high spec industries such as medical and life sciences, analytical and semiconductor amongst others.

 Investment in CNC machines

AMF are committed to continually investing and updating equipment and machines in order to provide the latest technology and industry trends. We have recently invested in new equipment including a CNC lathe (Takisawa EX108) and a CNC milling machine (Hass TMIP). Two great additions to our increasing CNC machine fleet; that allow us to expand our capacity and continue to respond even more agile to our customers’ needs.

For more information about the new equipment, please see our updated plant list.

Supporting the future

AMF has recently begun to take on pupils for a day of work experience from local schools in Merseyside. The pupils have been engaged to experience what it is like to work in a manufacturing environment. They have had the chance to help with our laser machine and to create various small 3 dimensional designs (pictures below).

In this way AMF attempt to keep engineering thriving in Wirral and inspire young people to become the engineers of the future.
